How to Develop English Writing Skills? by Saira Amjad Ali Kausar

People whose first language is not English have difficulty learning English. Some have difficulty speaking, while listening is a weaker language skill for others. To some, it seems impossible to write a paragraph without grammar, punctuation, or spelling mistakes. In reality, everything is possible. You can do anything with some dedication and hard work. In my life, I had the same experience with my English writing skills. From my experience, I have some tips and suggestions for you.

Read as much as you can

Reading is connected with writing skills. It would be best to read different kinds of writing pieces, for example, a blog, an article, a horror story, or a criminal case. Once you start reading, you will understand how many ways it helps you. You will learn vocabulary about various situations and things. Advanced vocabulary is necessary for a quality writing piece. As you come through one word several times while reading, it helps you remember the spelling. One more thing is that you will learn there are many different kinds of writing styles to express a certain feeling or to describe a situation.

Grammar

To develop your grammar skills, you need to practice correct English grammar in your daily life to remember it better and write easily when writing an essay. To learn about grammar, you will have to focus on basic English parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives and conjunctions. You should know what their meanings and their uses are? Make yourself clear about these. You should not have any doubts about them. After achieving this target, you should move on to the sentence structure. Start from very simple sentences and move towards compound sentences, active and passive voice. Tenses are imperative in order to make sentences. With the knowledge of tenses, you would be able to write about various parts of time, such as past, present and future.

Punctuation

Without punctuation, the sentences do not make clear sense and the sentence is incomplete. Punctuation marks guide the reader about the text's meaning. Always keep in your mind that you are writing for the reader. Your piece of writing should make the reader excited and interested in it. The reader should be able to understand what you are trying to convey. Understanding punctuation gives you chances to explain your emotions, questions and thoughts. Clear your mind about exclamation marks, question marks, colons, commas, etc.

Paragraph making

First of all, make your topic clear, plan your draft, and collect all of the ideas you will talk about. Now, write your topic sentence and provide support with middle sentences. The last sentence should be your conclusion to summarize the information provided before. A paragraph break is necessary to start a new paragraph by providing white space to give the reader a pause. Find a partner to read once you have written.

In conclusion, the only thing that matters is your willingness to improve and your actions to fulfill your will. There are many online resources where you can learn about English writing skills and access yourself by completing exercises and assessments. At the end of the assessment, always proofread your writing and check your spelling and punctuation. As I mentioned before, you write for the reader, so write clearly, accurately and concisely. Your mistakes destroy the interest of the reader.

Hi Saira, this is a well thought out piece. I can see that you approach this subject seriously and methodically. Have you ever considered that speaking can also help you to improve your writing? If we can develop a habit of taking a bit of time to construct the sentences before we speak, we can check our grammar and sentence structure. In order that we are able to speak and write well, we need to read more and listen well. Have you tried using journaling prompts to help you develop a habit of writing more fluently? Have a look at these here 88 Daily Journal Prompts & Questions (parade.com) Hope you continue to enjoy writing. Hilda
